canTUBAllada : `Every instrument needs its 15 minutes of fame, and this enterprising disc invites one to halt awhile with the tuba, played seductively by Nickel.` On record. The week´s essential new releases. The Sunday Times

`(...)the fine performance of the RVW´s Tuba Concerto (...) this new recording really made me sit up and listen with constant pleasure. The tuba is played by Hans Nickel whose skill and musicality are displayed to excellent effect(...) His tone is wonderfully focused, and the balancing between tuba and orchestra is beautifully judged. (...)These are (Alarum and canTUBAllada) performed brilliantly by Hans Nickel.´ Journal of the RVW Society

Tuba Obsessions : ´Your performance is very beautiful. (...)the CD is great!´ Mark Barton Principal Tubist, Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Houston Ballet Orchestra

´Danny Kaye`s Tubby memorably found a tune he could play, and Gregson does the same for Dutch vituoso Hans Nickel.´ Peter Spaull Liverpool Daily

canTUBAllada : ´What a wonderful CD! Congratulations (...)particularly to Hans for his extraordinary playing, impressive musicianship and communicative skill. (...)Alarum is a fantastic achievement - solo playing of such immense character.´ Edward Gregson, The Principal Royal Northern College of Music

Tuba Obsessions : ´(...)draws our attention to some impressive compositions, inspired by contemporary tuba virtuosi, of whom Hans Nickel is one.´ Brass Band World

Tuba Obsessions : ´Throughout the disc Nickel´s playing is seldom less than excellent and he engages the musical contours with panache.` British Bandsman

´Brilliant Dutch tuba player Hans Nickel (BB Limburg) followed up his best soloist prize at the European championships in Rotterdam last month with another success as best soloist in the Netherlands Open.´ Brass Band World

European Brass Band Championships, Cardiff : ´(...) Maurice Hamers, who also composed the centre piece of their programme, the colourful Chameleon, which was given a performance of the highest musical quality by tuba soloist Hans Nickel. Aided by visual effects, the soloist´s superb tonal control and phrasing was also matched by the delicacy of the difficult atmospheric accompaniments.´ The British Bandsman

'Before listening to the Nickel recording, I thought it (John Fletcher)hands down the definitive recording of the work.(...)There is a special place in my heart for Hans Nickel's version. He plays it exactly as written, and is the first to do so to really make music of it. His rendition is a lot more about humor than beauty, and I think that´s appropriate based on the comments of the composer. The sound he gets is fat with a little edge to it.(...)And it comes on the same CD with the Gregson with orchestral accompaniment, which was a revelation for me. His playing reshaped my notion of what an F tuba should sound like.'Re:VW recordings.www.chisham.com

Wolfsburger Nachrichten
